Make God First In Your Family

“I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.”
Genesis 12:2

In the book of Genesis, we read about a man named Abram (later named Abraham) who transformed his family and generations to come, by his relationship with God. Ultimately, Abraham was greatly blessed by God and became God’s man to bring the will, blessing, and transforming grace of God to his family and the generations that would follow. I’m convinced that God wants to do the same for each and every father today. God intended for his power to work through fathers in today’s world just as he did in Abraham’s time. Just by their spiritual position of headship, the man of the family has unequaled authority to invoke God’s blessing, protection, favor, and kingdom in the lives of each of his family members. I recently saw the results of a national survey of fathers from a June 2003 issue of Family Circle Magazine. It has some interesting results that I think are positive building blocks for fathers today that should transform their family life. These results showed that 94% feel that building a family is the hardest and most important thing a man can do. That 71% say fatherhood is more demanding than they expected, while 88% say fatherhood is more rewarding. It says that 87% feel the rewards of fatherhood are greater than their careers, and 89% approve of men leaving fast-track careers to spend time with their families. While 90% say becoming a father made them want to be a better person and a role model for their children. This study reveals that most fathers feel that their family is the most important things in their lives, however this study left out the most important thing that most fathers forget. The most important things fathers must have to make all the above statistics become realities is that they must have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Every father must have this relationship with Jesus in order to transform his family and affect his generations to come. This is what made Abraham so successful, in that his walk with God provided him the assurance that his family and his future generations would be blessed. For our families to be blessed we need to have them protected and under the control of God and obeying and doing his commands in our daily lives. While we may want the best for our families we cannot do it on our own, as we will falter and fail, but when we put our families under God’s control, he will provide, protect and provide the wisdom needed for us to guide our families in the way they should go. God is the answer to assure that our families will prosper, as when we let God’s wisdom guide us our families will be successful.
